Subject: iPad deployment

Madelaine, I am just starting to work with Corcoran High School in Corcoran, CA. They already have 1to1 iPads for 9th and 10th and a 1to1 MB Air for 11th and 12th which began last year. They are not using the devices to fully engage the learners yet (need PD in class with their own students) The school has gotten the faculty focused on improvement and they have shown nominal growth over the last four years.
The district is also moving toward the adoption of the Common Core standards. This adoption is what we are using as our motivation to help teachers see the value of 1to1.
By the next school year our goal is to establish a specific plan for use of the iPad/MBAs in class where students take charge of as much of the learning as we can give them. This means using the Comm,n Core to develop integrated projects, etc. We have a group of about 12 teachers that are willing to do the planning and the development of the process using Common Core and technology. We hope to find a UC researcher that will track the project.
That being said, maybe we could figure out a way to collaborate. Corcoran High also has an excellent video conference center where we could even get students to connect......

Hi Madeleine,

We are also in the process of discussing the laptop vs iPad question as we currently do not have a 1-1 program. Our committee is currently exploring the pluses and minuses of both. It's tricky as I see enormous benefits to the laptop (having worked in a laptop 1-1 environment), but also am seeing some real benefits to the iPad and see it growing with its offerings for education. We have spoken with a school that has done an iPad rollout and schools who have done the laptop rollout. We have put together a comparison chart and are now looking to make a decision.

One of the things that we have discussed is that if we do go iPad for our MYP/DP we will still need trolleys of laptops (or bookable lab space)for when students need to do higher end projects and for Technology classes. Then we still need to determine our policy for staff members - do they continue to receive a laptop as well as an iPad.

Any research that you come across, please share!

I'm the project director for a mobile learning initiative for CoSN, a group that's similar to ISTE, but geared towards school leaders. We've been working on this ongoing resource: https://sites.google.com/site/lmlguide/ and I've also been collecting lots of useful links here: http://groups.diigo.com/group/leadership-for-mobile-learning-initiative. You can search this for keywords such as "pilot", "iPad", "guide", and "research".

Aside from this project, I'm working with a high school in Michigan that's transitioning from PC tablets to iPads, and you might be interested in their journey: http://it.mhsmi.org/. This school has an amazing leadership team, including an ADE, and it's been really fun to work with them. I'm going next month to spend a day with their students, and I can't wait!
That said, regarding the 2:1 situation, I have not run across too many scenarios like this. I think this school has a 2:1 deployment and their IT head is an ADE: http://www.avenues.org/. Also, I presented at a conference at this school last summer, and they are 2:1 as well: http://www.greateratlantachristian.org/NetCommunity/Page.aspx?pid=224. Finally, you may want to talk to Julie L. as Think Global School with whom she consults has a 3:1 situation!
And, regarding research, you need to do qualitative action research. I don't think setting up a control group is necessary... you want anecdotes about the added value, I would think. There is very little existing research that will give schools the ammunition they need to prove that iPads are worthwhile. My advice has been to not wait for the research, but do it yourself. An example is the Canby Oregon School District which has put all of their stuff into a wiki on this topic. The tech director is also an ADE and he's very, very knowledgable. Madeleine,

We too are in a similar situation. Some of the areas we are discussing include

1) Removing a 1 to 1 MBP program hinders the excellent advancement we have seen in student created work in subjects such as film and media, industrial design, digital art etc… Having such a powerful, versatile and high end creation tool in student's hands at all times has just been awesome.

2) While we are not all that fond of making IT decisions around textbooks - the availability of many of our textbooks as interactive ebooks is a plus for an iPad inclusion (2:1 program or replacement). We are starting to look at the cost of iPad mini + etextbooks in line with our yearly textbook costs. It maybe possible to justify the cost of an iPad within just the area of textbook savings.

3) Banks of iPads have been great down in our early years but there is still something missing when there isn't that ownership of the device. We have looked at banks of iPads for high school but didn't come up with enough real uses for such a setup when all students have their MBP.

4) We have no issues with students bringing their own devices in. We have stressed to staff that these are complimentary devices and should be encouraged if their is learning value. To help our staff understand the value of mobile devices we have included iPads in most of our departments and provided PD to teachers on using them in different areas. This has had a flow on effect to teachers being comfortable with students using these devices as well as laptops. It has been interesting to note that the feedback from staff who are using iPads and laptops is that they would alway rather have the laptop over the iPad. While the iPad is a great complimentary device it is not a replacement - YET!

5) Some staff have asked about iPads as a replacement for laptops for the reason of distraction - They feel iPads maybe less of a distraction in class. However, I don't believe this would be the case - I have the feeling (no evidence as such to back this up) that is is more the lack of engagement in some classes. Throw any technology at a boring class and unless you change the way you teach not much will change!

Would be interested what others are doing at the moment. With the introduction of the iPad mini the 2:1 concept is becoming more of a reality.
